The waiting is the hardest part of the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations program.
As the months continue to come and go, those who have applied to become a licensed producer in Canada are now becoming increasingly worried about the status of their application. Health Canada’s most recent numbers indicate that they have received over 1,000 applications. Over the last 100 days, they grant licenses to only two new applicants. Many of these groups have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars already preparing facilities, training staff members, and writing company policies and standard operating procedures.
While Health Canada has rejected over 200 applications already, many are still waiting, and fearing the worst. Health Canada, this time around, seems to be doing their due diligence when it comes to vetting and qualifying applicants. Many groups that have not received the dreaded rejection letter have instead received requests for more information. The requests from the Minister are typically opportunities for applicants to provide more details. These are usually on important topics such as quality assurance, security, or shipping methods.
Although some are losing patience. Others are still confident that Health Canada will continue to accept applications for quite some time. However, due to a large amount of already existing applications in the queue, it’s uncertain how many will ultimately be awarded one of the few licenses.
