History of Cannabis in Maine
Maine became the fourth state to legalize medical marijuana in 1999. The state of Maine taxes marijuana at a rate of 10 percent.
Maine allows for medical marijuana patients from out of state to purchase up to 2.5 ounces every 15 days. The list of approved states can be found here. However, it is illegal to transport marijuana across state lines.
Legalizing Adult-Use Cannabis in Maine
Maine voters legalized recreational marijuana for adult-use in 2016. However, the previous Governor, Paul Lepage, delayed the launch without a date. Above all, Lepage was a staunch opponent of marijuana legalization.
Officials in Maine hope to launch the program this fall. Originally the program was delayed until June because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials postponed the launch again to allow for stores to get approved and meet the expected demand.
But, only ten percent of municipalities in Maine have opted into the program so far.
Maine’s largest city, Portland has capped the amount of dispensaries at 20. Dispensaries will also need to be at least 250 feet apart. In addition, Portland gives extra points to applicants who have lived in Maine for over 5 years.
The Marijuana Business Factbook predicts that in-state customers will range from 190,000 to 230,000. In addition, Maine’s large tourism industry will bring in more customers. Consequently, Maine is expected to have a $300 million marijuana industry.
